Belki Üstümüzden Bir Kus Geçer / Maybe a Bird Will Fly Over Us
|
I grew up under a bird migration route in Turkey. When we moved into our new home after immigrating to the US in 2018, I remember looking up at the sky and feeling unsettled by the absence of birds. I explore this feeling through my sustained investigation by painting the two skylines in İstanbul and Los Angeles in order to find out how our identity is defined and what aspects of us change when our surroundings are altered.
I tend to use bright warm tones when painting images of the skyline in Turkey, as in Image 1, and blues mixed with pastel shades when depicting the skyline in LA, as in Image 2. When creating pieces like Image 1, I draw more freely, pulling images, shapes and colors out of my imagination. When it comes to pieces such as Image 2, I use reference images to create structures such as the phone wires. I scatter the same linoleum carved bird prints |
